Foscarini

New Foscarini Dolmen

A new year brings new designs and the first of many from Foscarini is the Dolmen collection.

Foscarini

The design is one of Foscarini most iconic, originally designed by Ferruccio Laviani in the mid-Nineties. The collection has been reworked to adapt to the new opportunities offered by LED technology.

The collection includes a suspension and floor version both using a dimmable LED source which provides a warm uniform light and allows a slimmer aesthetic.

The finishes transform its personality and suggest different feelings and settings; matt orange with an industrial tone or a matt brushed aluminium for hightech inspiration, or a warm bronze colour.

Foscarini

The Floor lamp is designed to be rested against a wall and give out a diffused and reflected light. The suspension hangs gracefully giving both a direct and indirect light.

Both the floor and suspension versions are made from a laser-cut sheet of aluminium which is bent using a pressure bending machine and hand finished. The aluminium is anodised and subsequently liquid coated with transparent varnish or coloured paint. The collection is available aluminium, orange or bronze.

Wastberg

New from Wastberg – w171 Alma

The w171 Alma collection designed by Tham & Videgård includes a suspension, wall and ceiling.

Alma suspension can be hung freely above a table or in a large room with multiple others creating a floating point of light.

Wastberg

The light image of the concentric circles can be varied depending on the choice of light source. The soft shapes create a pleasant atmosphere and in daylight the satin matte finish create a beautiful statement.

With its slim silhouette, w171 alma can also be mounted directly onto the ceiling or wall.

The w171 Alma lamp was originally developed for a brand new co-working facility project in Stockholm, called Alma. Tham & Videgård was entrusted with refurbishing the five floors, and with developing the light sources of the building together with Wästberg.

Foscarini

New finishes to the Foscarini collections

Tuareg

Foscarini

The existing Tuareg floor collection designed in 2013 now includes a matt white finish. Based on the architecture of archaic cultures, the Tuareg is a lamp with a powerful image like a work of land art in an interior landscape.

The structure is composed of aluminium tubing which creates a vivid and dynamic three dimensional form. The new matt white finish joins the original matt orange and glossy black.

Click here the view the Tuareg collection!

Le Soleil

Foscarini

A sphere composed of irregular bands, the Le Soleil pendant is large in size but visually light. When on, thanks to the bands, the light flows outward like sunbeams glimpsing through a cloud.

The Le soleil is now available with an integrated LED which creates a decorative and illuminating effect at the same time as a beam of light being projected downwards.

The Le Soleil is now available in an original copper and bronze finish that brings a new personality, enhancing the warm, natural glow of the lamp.

Spokes

Foscarini

The Spokes lamp is based on an observation of the spokes of a bicycle wheel, generating an object of great iconic force. Today the Spokes range now includes metallised finishes making the spokes seem even more slender and precious. The collection is now available in an elegant graphite and a warm copper tone which transform the presence of Spokes and opens up a world of decor possibilities.

Foscarini

Product focus – Foscarini Chouchin

The Foscarini Chouchin is a family of suspension lamp with the original design released in 2011 by French designer Ionna Vautrin. The name is taken from traditional Japanese paper and bamboo lanterns that are used as light bright signs outside restaurants or bars or as lucky charms outside homes.

Foscarini

Their traditional shape has been reinterpreted into a pure contemporary style using blown glass which has been painted to make it completely opaque and glossy. The family includes three shapes, each with its colour: orange for the large version, grey for the small version and green for the elongated one.

Next in the collection came the Mini version which was released in 2013. This version is available in two shapes and again each with its colour: orange for the large version and green for the elongated one. Similar as with the larger on the lower rim remains white to create a distinguishing graphic mark when the lamp is switched off and an incandescent luminous border when it is on. The Chouchin Mini is designed to be hung alone as a poetic suspended lantern or in a row, group, or even as a collective with larger models.

Foscarini

The third design of the family is the Chouchin reverse. The design has the same three shapes as before but the colours have been inverted; the diffuser is now white while the lower rim is the colour as the shape before. The change in the design is not only the colour but the light as now thanks to the pale glass diffuser it not only directs light down - like the original Chouchin - but diffuses a beautiful glow to its surroundings.

Santa & Cole

Product Focus – Santa & Cole GT Collection

Since the early 90’s Santa & Cole have championed the use of ribbon shades in their collections. The GT5 was the first in the GT collection and was then an alternative to the use of continuous textile, methacrylate and cardboard shades.

Santa & Cole

It was later followed by the GT6 and then the Larger GT7, GT1000 and GT1500 which were designed to be used in large public venues. The colourful GT family is one that can change its scale without losing the essence of its design.

Santa & Cole

Perfect for home settings the GT5 and GT6 are two ribbon shade pendants that create a beautiful atmosphere in a room while being merely there in size compared to the larger GT7.

The GT Collection is available in a range of colour including Natural, Black and Red-amber with the larger sizes also available in Raw Terracotta, Raw Mustard and Raw Green.

&Tradition

Product Focus - &Tradition Formakami

“In typical Jaime Hayon style, these Paper Lanterns challenge convention,” notes &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen.

&Tradition

Designed in 2015 by Jamie Hayon, the &Tradition Formakami is a beautiful handmade rice paper pendant which is available in three styles.

Dating back centuries, paper lanterns have featured in Asia amongst both the privileged and the poor where different colours, shapes and sizes connote different meanings. The series includes three sizes with ivory white rice paper and black stained oak accents with each only weighing 1 kilo helping them to hang delicately in any indoor setting.

Designer Hayon has taken cultural inspiration for the Formakami collection yet deviated from formalities by creating the lanterns all in white.

&Tradition

“Lamps play such an important role in people’s lives,” explains Hayon. “For some cultures, they chase away the darkness by bringing hope. I’ve tried to keep this emotional angle about light – in a lamp that also appears light. By making the bottom part of the lamp open, the idea is to bring even more illumination to people everywhere in the world.”

Foscarini

Featured – Foscarini Birdie

The Birdie collection by Foscarini is a family of lamps which is inspired by the poetic image of a bird on a branch.

Although they are all recognisably part of the birdie collection, each version of the birdie lamp is a design in its own right. The collection includes suspension, wall, floor and table options and is available in White, Grey, Amaranth or Orange.

Foscarini

Wall

The Birdie wall model expands the possibility of creating combination of the various versions. It’s subtle design and natural inspiration allows the wall version to blend in easily with the most unlikely of settings creating a different looks for each space.

Foscarini

Suspension

The Birdie suspension is suspended in the air with its straightforward and harmonious diffuser. Multiple suspension versions are also available. With either 3,6 or 9 shades the suspension has the same number of white finish arms which act almost like branches of a tree to support the diffusers. Thanks to the additional cable set, the Birdie pendant can be made to suit your room whatever the ceiling height and is available in a ceiling version should no drop be required.

Foscarini

Table

The Birdie table has a slim stem which represent the trunk of a tree. The shade is a reinterpretation of the classic reading lamp while the branch beckons your touch, turning it on or off. These elements work together to give life to a friendly lamp which combines a smooth and familiar structure with a bold character. The Birdie come in two sizes ensuring whether placed in the living room, on a desk or on a bedside table the lamp fits in naturally in the space and add a stylish touch to everyday life.

Foscarini

Floor

The Birdie floor has a similar design to the table with a long slim stem and a classic shade with a branch like detail. The Birdie floor stands at 150cm and is perfect to be used to light a area for example where you sew or read.

Foscarini

NEW IN

We are happy to announce that the long awaited latest designs from Foscarini are now available online!

The Aplomb Large

Foscarini

The Aplomb Large is a new lamp made from concrete but with a different shape from the original. The new design is not just larger in size but also fitted with a built in LED light source which is placed into the body of the lamp casting a wide beam of light onto the surface below.

The Aplomb Large is made by Italian experts which faced a challenge to obtain a slim thickness, a lightweight shape and a textured surface which is still pleasant to touch.  This was all achieved by their profound knowledge of the raw material which allowed them to create the perfect mix which is fluid when poured into the cast.

The Aplomb Large is available in three different colours white, grey and brown made by pigments which are directly added to the material blend.  The Aplomb Large is perfect for over a table, a kitchen island or placed in a repeated linear composition.

The Spokes 2 Large

Foscarini

The Spokes 2 Large is a larger version of the original Spokes 2 suspension. The design draws inspiration from the spokes of a bicycle wheel, which contain the light within while at the same time allowing light to filter out. The built in LED makes it possible to light the floor or surface underneath while creating magical shadows on the walls and ceiling.

The lamp suits various settings such as in both residential and commercial areas perfect placed in the middle of the room or with the original version to create a fascinating lighting composition. The Spoke 2 Large has a 70cm diameter and is available in either white or yellow.

Buds Collection

Foscarini

The Buds collection of table, floor and suspension lamps was designed in 1990 by Rodolfo Dordoni, an architect whose work ranges across furnishings, lamp design and many more. The lamps were made in brightly coloured blown glass, named after the natural elements: Fruits, Blossom and Buds. Today the Buds have been restyled again to interpret the contemporary and sophisticated focus on materials. The beauty of the design remains the blown glass with a five-layer hand-crafted process. The new range of colours includes cold brown, cold grey, bamboo green and white and with a straw-yellow internal finish the lamp is warm when the lamp is on and cold when off.

Wastberg

Wästberg’s latest releases

Back in the summer we gave you an exclusive look at some of Wästberg’s eagerly anticipated designs. We are excited to announce that they’re now available online!

The Studioilse Collection

Wastberg

The studioilse Collection is designed by Ilse Crawford and includes a floor, wall and suspension version as well as two table designs. The w084 studioilse lamp uses materials that carry clear messages: iron because of its feelings of stability, reliability and trust; wood because of its warmth and life, and mineral plastic because of its intimate glow, as well as its tactility.

The w124 Lindvall Table

Wastberg

Designed by Jonas Lindvall the Lindvall family of lights derives from experimenting with the influence that different materials have on the emotional quality of the light they reflect. For example copper brings beautiful, deep warmth to the light. The lamp was designed to direct the light downwards, but also to help create ambiance in a room.

The W161 Marfa Table

Wastberg

For their architectural project, the inde/jacobs gallery building in Marfa Texas, Claesson Koivisto Rune in collaboration with Wästberg designed a task light for Mr Vilis Inde’s gallery desk.  The w161 marfa Lamp is an LED task light made out of one piece of anodized or lacquered aluminium, folded three times. When seen from the side, the lamp is merely a thin line. Minimal expression. Maximum efficiency in material, production, light and energy consumption.

The w154 Pal Table

Wastberg

Pal w154 is the essence of modern task lighting: an engineered but graceful construction that sets its focus on bringing high quality LED light. The all metal structure with its slim profiles and integrated mechanics allows for a smooth and easy movement. Incorporated is an 8W high-end warm LED with intelligent heat dissipation and light diffusion.

The w111 Van Severen Table

Wastberg

Wästberg has known designer Maarten Van Severen for years. After his death in 2005 through the relationship with Maarten’s family and Magnus Wästberg, they suggested the revival of one of Maarten’s most brilliant products – the U-line lamp – that had gone out of production with its previous manufacturer. With much improved technical performance and equipped with LED’s it is now re-named Van Severen w111.

The w163 lampyre Table

Wastberg

The w163 lampyre is designed by Inga Sempé and is made of two opaline glass parts, creating a calming light from base to top. Lampyre is the french name for glow-worm, which can be linked to the very natural aspect of this lamp. The w163 lampyre comes in two sizes and the light can be adjusted, perfect to enlighten any space with softness.

The w082 irvine Table

Wastberg

Designed by James Irvine the theme of the lamp is one of those design projects that always has to measure itself with great masterpieces from the past. The lamp can be rotated round and the arm extended. The lamp can also be made dimmable so that you can change the light intensity dependant upon what room it is situated in.

The Nendo Collection

Wastberg

Designed by Nendo the light fixtures are made by a system of parts. The height of the light can be easily changed by adding and rearranging the components. By attaching the wire unit to the shade, it becomes a pendant lamp and by adding a longer post makes it a floor lamp. The shade is available in three different shapes: a cone, a sphere and a cylinder. A selection of accessories - a table, a bowl and a bird-cage - made of the lamp’s standard components, are also available.

Secto

Celebrating Natural Wood Lighting with Secto Design

Secto

Secto Design and designer Seppo Koho crossed paths in 1995 when founder Tuula Jusélius was seeking a designer for her new company, whose first products were furniture made of innovative glue-laminated wood. The two shared a respect for Northern wood as well as Scandinavian, clear design and professional woodworking.

Secto customers noted that they couldn’t find any suitable lamps which matched their beautiful furniture and Tuula Jusélius noticed the same, there simply were no wooden lamps on the market. The result was the Secto pendant lamp that is still the backbone of the collection.

Secto

Seppo Koho proved that making Secto lamps was possible however finding a manufacture for production proved difficult. In the town of Heinola they found their way to Heikki Saastamoinen a cabinetmaker who developed a method which allowed them to manufacture the lamps by hand.

To begin with their idea was met with the challenge of retailers not being ready for wooden lamps. It took a while for the message to be made but there were those too who were immediately attracted to the concept.

In the early 2000’s Tuula Jusélius's decided to give up furniture and turn the focus solely on designing lamps. Heikki Saastamoinen's small workshop has grown into a factory and a prominent woodworking hub in the Heinola area.

The new Secto Design models have also generated work for other manufactures; altogether the supply network includes some twenty partner companies and contractors.

Secto

Secto Design shades are made of PEFC certified, top-quality Finnish birch veneers that are formpressed into blanks. The blanks are cut into slats, which are sanded and finally connected using rings of aircraft plywood. The slats are glued and nailed to the rings. All the work is carried out in Finland and all the lamps are finished and checked carefully before sending them to their destinations.

With Secto designs the light source is hidden inside the shade to prevent blinding the viewer. The warm light reflecting from the birch emphasizes space and creates an inviting environment.  The Pictures do not do justice to the light filtering in through the wood battens: it must be experienced directly.

Secto

Secto pride themselves on caring for the environment. Their designs are initially designed for energy saving bulbs and today Secto Design is actively searching for new, low-energy light sources such as the best possible LEDs.

The birch of the Secto Design lamps is produced in Central Finland that is transported only short distances. During production recycling and sorting are paid attention to, and sawdust, for example, is used to make wood pellets for the heating of houses.

20 September 2016 Permalink

Gubi

New in from Gubi is the Satellite Suspension designed by Mathieu Matégot. The suspension lamp comes in two sizes and is available in five shades; Black Midnight, Rainy Grey, Venetian Gold, Shy Cherry and White Cloud.

Davide Groppi - Fosbury the best lighting for “AZ Award 2016”

14 September 2016 Permalink

Davide Groppi

As Davide Groppi collects an AZ Award for the Fosbury light we look back at where it all began for him.

‘The Fosbury light is a luminaire that is a hybrid between a floor and suspension in a special composition inspired by the aerial sculptures of the American sculptor Alexander Calder.’

Davide Groppi

It all started for Davide Groppi in a small laboratory in the Italian town of Piacenza during the late 1980’s. For Davide simplicity, weightlessness, emotion and creative invention are the fundamental components of each lamp or project.

Over the years he has developed various products and held shows in collaboration with companies specialising in design such as De Padova and Christofle. Throughout his career Davide Groppi has worked with a faithful group of collaborators who share his vision and help to bring his ideas to life.

Davide Groppi’s excellence has been recognised by the press and he has received prestigious awards for his lighting creations, including the Edida Award in 2011, the Design Plus Award in 2014 as well as two at the 23rd edition of the ADI Compasso d’Oro Awards and the ADI Compasso d’Oro Mention of Honour upon the rechargeable lamp Tetatet in 2016.

Celebrating Sonora by Oluce

27 July 2016 Permalink

Oluce

Oluce

First designed in 1976 by Vico Magistretti for Oluce, Sonora became an emblematic product for the Italian company. The Sonora’s design stemmed from the popular sixties style of geometric shapes that transformed textiles, furnishings and fashions of the decade. Magistretti became somewhat obsessed with this design and what it symbolised, continuously evolving Sonora and forming a collection of suspension lights. The essence of Sonora’s form was its pure shape, viewed as a hemisphere for the huge impact it brings to a space. Magistretti believed when illuminated it characterized the whole environment with the volume it brought.

Oluce

Sonora was originally formed from a spun aluminium reflector and came in three sizes. In 1990, the collection expanded to an etched murano glass version which was very popular. In 1999, 2003 and 2009 additional sizes and finishes such as black or white with gold interior became available. The still expanding collection gives choice and flexibility to proud home owners and interior designers alike. Most commonly, the Sonora is placed over dinning tables. The glowing half sphere creates a beautiful atmosphere that brings people together for these everyday rituals.

This year Oluce Sonora turns forty years old, and to mark this occasion a video tribute will be shown to commemorate the iconic designer and his contribution to interior style.

Oluce

On the eve of Sonora’s fortieth birthday, Oluce are releasing a gold version of the 408 and 437 coming soon.
