Mater

Founded by Henrik Marstrand in Copenhagen in 2006, the Mater designer brand has been “Circular” since its conception, with sustainability and circular production being at the company’s core. The brand creates products that have little impact on the environment, using only sustainable materials in collaboration with large global companies to produce timeless and long-lasting designs. Mater uses materials such as industrial plastic waste, FSC certified wood and discarded fishing nets to create stylish lighting, furniture and objects, creating a cyclical production line that reduces emissions and waste. As a company, Mater will never stand still. The brand is continuously committed to finding and developing new waste materials and techniques that allow their team to create more from less. They understand that the future of the planet relies on circular solutions and green innovations, and that’s what they work for.

In 2020, they launched their own patented material: Matek. The unique material is made up of waste materials by combining fibre, such as coffee bean shells, with a binder, which is made from plastic waste or a plastic-based alternative. The mix of materials results in a unique compound suitable for press moulding, a well-known technique in the furniture industry.

Mater works with many designers to produce stunning pendant lights, floor lamps, seating, wall lights and much more for the contemporary user. Their ethos works hand in hand and supports eight of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, showing how design can help our environment instead of hindering it. A truly forward-thinking brand, Mater is committed to finding a new and responsible way of producing wonderful design that doesn’t badly impact the planet.
