3 Days of Design in Copenhagen

On 16th – 18th September 2021, Denmark’s annual design festival, 3 Days of Design, commenced in Copenhagen, exhibiting up & coming designers, new releases and iconic designs from the best in the lifestyle, furniture and lighting design industry. This event is a key feature in the calendar of anybody who works in the design world!

Some of the biggest names in design took up residence in showrooms and impressive exhibition spaces throughout the city to give us insight and inspiration for the year ahead, as well as sharing inspiring talks and unveiling new releases.

Some of the David Village Lighting Team were lucky enough to head over to Copenhagen to take a look at key exhibits from the event to keep us ahead of the curve, which is vital in our ever-evolving design industry.

Here are some of our favourite images from our time in Copenhagen...

Flos:

It was an honour to experience some of Flos' iconic pieces up close. The brand are innovators in design and and now they are renowned for working with some of the biggest icons in lighting design. The designers who have collaborated with Flos include Philippe Starck, Achille Castiglioni and Jasper Morrison.

For statement lighting design pieces such as Arrangements, Noctambule and Coordinates, we can see how high ceilings make such an impactful interior feature. With many options and versions to choose from, Flos’ contemporary lighting designs can work perfectly in a wide range of spaces, both residential and commercial.

Vitra Akari Light Sculptures:

The handmade Japanese paper lanterns, Akari Light Sculptures, were designed by Isamu Noguchi and can be characterised by their weightless luminosity. This inspiration for these lights was found during a trip to Japan, when Noguchi paid a visit to Gifu, a town known for its manufacture of paper lanterns. While there, he sketched his very first Akari Light Sculptures, and chose the title 'Akari' for these pieces as the word means 'light' in Japanese.

These lighting solutions looked stunning as a multiple pendant installation in this dramatic interior setting!

Fritz Hansen:

The Fritz Hansen exhibition was a combination of elegance and warm illumination. The brand is proud of its tradition of combining exquisite craftsmanship, quality and timeless design, and they work with internationally recognised designers and architects to develop and manufacture high-quality modern lighting.

An eye-catching installation of Suspence pendants by Fritz Hansen, along with the frosted plum glass Maluma pendant, which is a recent release from earlier this year.

Fritz Hansen’s newest release is the Clam pendant, designed by Ahm & Lund, which was revealed at the 3 Days of Design event! Clam is a unique design which diffuses light beautifully through a pair of opal glass shades, acting as shells protecting a glowing pearl of light within.

Louis Poulsen:

Louis Poulsen is a staple in Danish design, and believes that the quality of materials has a direct impact on the quality of light. This means that their creations are not only beautiful but also of the highest quality. Louis Poulsen's approach to lighting lies in a very strict and uncompromising product philosophy grounded in simplicity. There must be no elements that do not serve a light-related purpose.

It’s always wonderful to see bestselling designs in person, and the Louis Poulsen Artichoke is an amazing statement pendant; to see it styled in a living room scenario was breathtaking. Whilst exploring the showroom, we also saw some of the VL45 pendants, the Yuh collection and some new, mysterious sphere lights.

Muuto:

Muuto are known for their impeccably styled room sets and showroom spaces, really giving us an idea of how their lighting and furniture work in the everyday home. The Danish brand strives to expand the Scandinavian design tradition with new perspectives by handpicking the brightest design talent in Scandinavia and giving them the freedom to express their perspectives through everyday objects.

A beautiful mix of natural materials, pleasing colour palettes and highly functional design reminds us how accessible and comforting the Scandinavian way of living is, and we are overjoyed that we got to experience it in person!

New Works:

The New Works lighting collection presents an intersection between old and new and captures the essence of their four core principles: natural materials, experimental design, tactility and craftsmanship.

Bestselling collections Lantern and Material took centre stage on the New Works display, and they are a perfect example of how matching lights can work together within a space to create flowing continuity. Whilst a new collection was unveiled during the 3 Days of Design event: Margin – a tiered shade design comprising pendant lights, table lamp and floor lamp, coming soon!

Normann Copenhagen:

Normann Copenhagen was another brand we were lucky to explore; they are renowned for their design simplicity and laid-back style, with an emphasis on durability. Their work is illustrated through clean lines with a playful twist. They believe that good design is made to last, and strive to create designs that are as relevant now as in the future.

It was wonderful to see popular designs by Normann Copenhagen on display to demonstrate how they can be used in a range of spaces. Phantom, Bell and Amp Chandelier work perfectly over dining areas or even in social living areas, adding a touch of style as well as much-needed ambience.

Now life is resuming to something more like normality, it will be a pleasure to visit more events such as these to catch up with our brands and gather newfound inspiration to pass on to our design-loving customers.
