Nelson saw a set of Swedish silk-covered orb pendants that he wanted for his office but later discovered the lights were costly and unavailable. Afterwards, Nelson decided to use his resources to create a more available and affordable alternative. Instead of the silk used on the original, he decided to go with a spray-on polymer webbing material that when sprayed on a lightweight steel frame, creates these iconic glowing ceiling lights that appear to float mid-air. From this shade, Nelson earned the position of an influential figure in an early period of modern design.
