Maarten Baas is a Dutch artist and designer, renowned for his playful and thought-provoking approach to design. Baas studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 2002. His graduation project, Smoke, featured charcoal-burned furniture, preserved in epoxy resin to maintain the beauty of unpredictability in nature. This collection was later produced by lighting and furniture brand, Moooi, making the collection accessible to consumers around the world.
Maarten Baas is known for his conceptual art and the theatrical flair that goes into his installations. His work has been displayed in worldwide museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Maeten Baas won the Artprize for his Real Time Sweepers Clock (2016), was named Designer of the Year at Design Basel/Miami (2009), and the New York Times listed Smoke and Clay in its “Top 25 Design Classics of the Future” (2012).
