Tom Raffield is a Cornish-based design studio specialising in lighting and homeware. Tom Raffield founded the studio in 2008 after graduating from Falmouth College of Arts with a degree in 3D Sustainability and Design. During his studies, Raffield discovered the ancient craft of steam-bending wood, a process that bends and twists wood beyond its apparent limits. Although the process is seldom used in large-scale manufacturing, Tom Raffield uses this technique throughout his brand for sustainable designs that feature intricate structures that would otherwise be impossible to create. The end result is a catalogue of elegant natural lighting solutions, available in a wide range of applications and wooden finishes.
The brand pride themselves on their sustainability, avoiding the use of glues and ensuring very low levels of wastage to create lighting pieces that will become heirlooms of the future. Tom Raffield Lighting creates products with the smallest ecological footprint possible, inspired by nature and designed to last a lifetime. Each piece is handcrafted by skilled craftsmen from their British studio in Cornwall, England. From starting out as a self-taught student to experimenting and developing steam-bending methods, Tom Raffield has found himself one of the world's leaders in the craft and has gone on to be awarded a variety of accolades for his work, including an Elle Decoration British Design Award.
"Having such a good understanding of the material and the process ensures there are no restrictions on creativity – knowing that anything can be achieved is extraordinarily liberating” - Tom Raffield, Founder
