Rainer Mutsch is an Austrian industrial designer with a multidisciplinary background in design. His father worked as a carpenter, which gave Mutsch a knowledge of the industry from a young age. After studying Furniture Design at Denmark's Design School Copenhagen and Product Design at the University of Arts Berlin, Mutsch completed his degree in Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2008, he opened his studio, focusing on furniture and lighting design.
Rainer Mutsch strives to create objects that serve a purpose, seamlessly blending form and function. With an open-minded approach to design, he manages to include a light-hearted element of fun to his work. During his collaboration with Axolight, Mutsch created the Orchid Collection, a sculptural series that features natural blossom-light structures. Throughout his career, Rainer Mutsch has been awarded a number of notable accolades, including the Young Creatives Award, 2001, the Eternit Design Award, 2008, and the Roemerquelle Design Award, 2008.
“I like to make objects that are capable of transporting the material. The design shouldn’t try something that the material is not capable of.” - Rainer Mutsch
