Konstantin Grcic is a German designer, born in Munich in 1965. He originally trained to be a cabinetmaker at John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood before moving on to study Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Grcic states that this change in academia came from his sister giving him a copy of the Electa book about A. Castiglioni in 1985. In 1991, Grcic founded his own studio where he has developed furniture, products and lighting for leading companies.
His work has earned him a series of international awards, including the Compasso d’Oro and the German Design Award in Gold. From 2020 to 2024, Grcic held a professorship at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and has since been Honorary Professor. He was appointed a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, in 2021 and the Academy of the Fine Arts, Munich, in 2022.
"The fact that life is not perfect makes it all the more interesting; it is therefore all right if products are a bit unruly. My designs do not immediately reveal themselves. They do what they are designed to do, are functional, but at the same time, they question their own functionality and call upon the user to do likewise." - Konstantin Grcic
