Gianfranco Frattini

Gianfranco Frattini
Gianfranco Frattini (1926–2004) was an influential Italian architect and designer, and a key figure in shaping the mid-century Italian design movement. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, Frattini initially worked with legendary architect Gio Ponti, where he absorbed the principles of modernism and creativity. Once moving on from Ponti's studio, Frattini opened his own practice in Milan. Over his career, he designed for esteemed brands such as Cassina, producing innovative furniture and lighting pieces that exemplify his holistic design philosophy.

Frattini viewed lighting as an integral part of any project, elevating interiors with his meticulous attention to detail and elegant solutions. One of Frattini’s most notable creations is the Aspide lamp, a groundbreaking design now sold by Gubi. Its flexible, snake-like design exemplifies his forward-thinking approach to form and function.

His belief in ‘total design’ ensured that every element of his interiors, from ceilings to lighting, worked harmoniously, creating spaces that were as timeless as they were functional. He has also collaborated with Artemide on a range of classic lighting solutions still sold today.
