Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was a Danish architect and furniture designer who played a significant role in popularising Danish Modern design. Since his early years, Finn Juhl had a fascination with fine arts and dreamt of becoming an art historian. However, as his father would not allow him to pursue an art career, Juhl studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. During his studies, Finn Juhl became acquainted with Vilhelm Lauritzen, who hired him at his architectural office in 1934.

Inspired by modern art, Finn Juhl’s work challenged the prevailing norms of Danish design. Unlike his modernist contemporaries, who created streamlined and scaffolding-like structures, Juhl aimed to create pieces that had a more organic and natural aesthetic that exuded movement and life. His work helped elevate Scandinavian design to a global level. Today, his pieces continue to be celebrated and sought after, and many still resonate with a contemporary feel.

“Art has always been my main source of inspiration. I am fascinated by shapes which defy gravity and create visual lightness.” – Finn Juhl
