Erik Hansen was born in 1916 in Denmark. He worked as chief engineer for Le Klint where he created their iconic 224 Sax Light.
Hansen's position at Le Klint began by chance. After having difficulty finding a suitable bedside reading lamp, Erik Hansen decided to design his own. After completing the frame, Erik Hansen’s wife, Ruth Hansen, visited Le Klint’s shop to purchase a shade for the lamp. Upon seeing the design, sales director Allan Bock was so impressed that he asked Erik Hansen to develop the design for Le Klint. Production began in 1952 of the classic 224 wall light that is still popular to this day.
Erik Hansen used his experience as an industrial engineer to design the 224. The foldable frame adds a mathematical element that allows the user to adjust the position of the light source to where it’s required. Over the years, this bracket has been released in different types of wood and as a special edition 224 Anniversary Model, which features brass detailing and a twisted textile cord.
Although many have tried to imitate his designs, Erik Hansen managed to create pieces that to this day have not been beaten. Hansen died in 1982, but his legacy remains, and he is still celebrated as a key designer in Le Klint's history.
