from David Village Lighting
Serge Mouille is a family-run lighting brand, founded by Gin Mouille in 1999. The lighting manufacturing company was created to honour the legacy of Serge Mouille, a devoted designer and teacher who was born in Paris in 1922. Mouille developed a talent for drawing at a very early age, finding his models at the Jardin des Plantes, where he spent hours drawing plants and animals. At the age of only 13, he passed the entrance exam for Applied Arts and was noted as being the youngest student of that time.
In 1953, Serge Mouille was hired by Jacques Adnet, and his career in lighting design began. Mouille designed large, angular, insect-like luminaires and worked to achieve a kinetic, sculptural aesthetic that evoked a sense of movement in space. Most of his works were exhibited at the Steph Simon Gallery in Paris, known for spearheading modernity and the functional integration movement for interior design.
As a brand, Serge Mouille honours his industrial style designs. Although his work producing light fixtures came to an end in 1963, when he decided to devote himself entirely to teaching until his death in December 1988, his widow wanted to ensure his legacy lived on. Gin Mouille and Claude Delpiroux ventured into producing the lamps of Serge Mouille's designs with all original measurements and materials.
