Bulbo 57 Pendant by Flos
The latest release by Flos, the Bulbo57 pendant light is an influential and iconic lamp by design brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The light was originally conceived in 1957 for an installation at the XI Triennale in Milan, a design and architecture exhibition that invites esteemed designers from all around the world to showcase their work.
An example of pure simplicity, the distinguished Bulbo light is large and industrial, creating a beautiful bubble form that strips back the complications and convolutions of lighting design. The loss of a screw cap and the shortened neck of the glass characterises this light, showing how the Castiglioni brothers always strived to deconstruct existing forms, structures and shapes.
Now being updated with the 2019 Bublo57 edition, the light has new life with an LED light source which replicates the original filament from the 1957 bulb. At the 1957 installation, each bulb was connected to each other to create a series of Bulbo lights which ultimately meant that the overall light output was reduced. The end result was a reddish hue produced by each bulb, giving a warm, atmospheric glow that was low in intensity and ambient in effect. The 2019 edition replicates this colour in LED form, as the light temperature is kept at 2200K to imitate a traditional incandescent lamp.
The bulb is made from blown borosilicate glass which has good shock resistance and amazing transparency thanks to the reduced thickness of the material. Both delicate in look and long lasting, the Bulbo 57 pendant lamp is a truly stunning light that will impress all that see it and will bring vintage Italian design to any domestic or commercial interior.
