Thomas Heatherwick is a British designer born in London. Heatherwick spent his childhood drawing inspiration from the creative people in his life. His father was a musician, his mother designed jewellery, one of his grandmothers founded the textile studio at Marks & Spencer, and his great-grandfather was the owner of fashion brand and retailer Jaeger. In 1994, after graduating from the Royal College of Art, Heatherwick founded Heatherwick Studio.
Thomas Heatherwick is renowned for his lavish architectural projects that have attracted plenty of attention, earning praise as well as some scepticism and criticism. His innovative designs have won numerous awards, including the Prix Versailles, Prince Philip Designers Prize, and RIBA National Awards. Thomas Heatherwick moved from grand architectural designs to the world of lighting when lighting brand Tala approached Heatherwick Studio to create the Wake Table Lamp. As well as featuring smart sleep technology, the Wake boasts a soulfulness and delicate beauty.
“At the root of everything I do is a fascination with ideas – what ideas are for, what jobs they do”
