Jacques Biny (1913-1976) was a French lighting designer and publisher. He started out as a decorator, and upon discovering a lack of lighting on site he decided to develop his own solution - which he offered to his customers. Biny originally graduated from National School of Decorative Arts in Paris but went on to found his own lighting workshop in 1955, which he titled Luminalite.

Biny produced nearly 400 models over a span of thirty years in his factory, and Luminalite was prominently involved in pushing the boundaries of contemporary lighting. He utilised state of the art materials, and his work encapsulated functionality, minimalism and elegance. Jacques Biny's experience in the decorating field helped him to put functionality at the forefront of his designs and ensure every creation helped to solve the users problem.

"It is the search for the correct balance between the rigours of the technique and an aesthetic, which integrates with contemporary architecture that has guided the creation of my lights" - Jacques Biny
