BEGA

Photo Diary - our trip to Bega, Germany

Recently some of our team travelled to Germany after being invited by Bega to learn all about their beautifully engineered products.

We began our trip with a mesmerising light show at their outdoor factory and showroom in Menden. Next stop was Limburg which is home to Bega’s indoor glass factory where we got to see expert glass makers at work.

Below we’ve put together a photo diary of our trip!

Muuto

New in from Muuto

We’ve recently added some of Muuto’s latest designs online and below we have all you need to know about the latest must haves.

Tip Table

Muuto

The Tip table is created from the idea of stripping a design down to its essentials. The design is by Jens Fager, one of Sweden’s most interesting young designers. Fager graduated from Stockholm’s KonstfackUniversity and has made his mark on the international design scene with exhibitions in London, Milan and Stockholm. The table light is an example of a simple, functional design with careful attention to detail offering a direct as well as ambient light.
The power coated aluminium frame is available in a range of colours and has a dimmer function enabling you to effortlessly control the light intensity.

“TIP is a purist yet playful lamp that features a characteristic architectural silhouette. During the design process, I focused on polishing every single detail while emphasising the functional aspect of the lamp: I wanted to reduce the design to the very essence of its purpose. The moulded aluminium frame lends the Tip Lamp a clean, precise look, underscoring its subtle aesthetic.” Jens Fager.

Airy Table

Muuto

The new Airy table collection is a design by one of Scandinavia’s leading designers, Cecilie Manz. Airy consist of a polished plywood table top and a metal frame which is soldered and welded to create a light and skinny silhouette. The collection is available in four different sizes, shapes and colours; grey, black, Oregon pine or off white.

“The idea behind AIRY was to create a coffee table that did not scream but still was not afraid to speak. The result is a table series that masters the fine balance between being light and airy, and at the same time having plenty of personality and individuality. Due to this combination AIRY gets a multi-functionality that makes the side tables suitable for every kind of interior.” Cecilie Manz.

Loft Chair

Muuto

The loft chair by designer Thomas Bentzen is inspired by life’s everyday requirements.  The chairs design is simple and honest with contrasting materials. Loft’s solid, powder coated steel frame is offset with the warmth of plywood and is a nostalgic nod to industrial design. The visible screws further enhance the engineered feel and the materials provide a functional yet sophisticated chair fitting for any setting.

“The steel frame features simple joints and welds, lending a precise and solid appearance to the chair. The curved seat and backrest contrast this, making the Loft Chair very human and comfortable.” Thomas Bentzen

Coming soon... Cestita Bateria

Santa and Cole Cestita Santa and Cole Cestita

The classic design of Cestita by Santa & Cole gets a modern new addition to its set of features! The original style was created in 1962 by visionary designer Miguel Mila, featuring a cherry wood handle which allows the user to take the lamp further. Even back in the 60’s people were fascinated with the ability to move usually fixed items to exactly where they need them.

Santa and Cole Cestita

Now with the increase of battery operated devises, the portability of products has become more important. The progression from the classic style was to take away the cable and let the small Cestita go wherever the user needs it to.

Keeping its integrity, Cestita has no unsightly charging port or add on bulky battery. The design stays original but with a new found place in modern day life.

Coming soon…

Artemide

An exclusive interview with Giuseppe Scutella

While in Milan visiting Euroluce; the largest lighting exhibition in the world, our very own David Village got the chance to interview designer Giuseppe Scutella. He has designed many masterpieces throughout his career with one of his most recent pieces being the Artemide Pirce.

We took this chance to learn more about the way Giuseppe Scutella creates his beautiful design and what inspires him the most.

Artemide

(David Village and Giuseppe Scutella)

David VillageWhat attracts you to lighting design and do you prefer this to other types of product design?

Giuseppe Scutella: My preference is for designing lights because for me a light is completely different from other items, say a chair or a library. Why, because the light is alive, it is an object which is alive. In the morning when we wake, we see light coming through the window and you can feel its effect. Light is the only product that can exist without the shape, only through the effect that it produces. This particular for me is always very important not only because we can always turn a light off or turn on, but because it is completely different from all others products. Mario Bellini, a famous designer a few years ago thought that one chair is enough, because a chair is only an object. But for a designer like me each light is completely different. With each light we design we can put inside our emotions which cannot exist in other products. For this reason 80% of my energy in a year will be working on lighting designs and the light which they produce.

David VillageSo you prefer to design lighting rather than objects, even though it can be more technical?

Giuseppe Scutella: Yes. We have the interesting change now from electrics to electronics. It is a bit like when analogue changed to digital. We must change to the new technology with all new designs but it’s very important for me to still keep the emotional effect of the lamp. When I see a lamp I have to feel it. The first thing we see after 9 months inside our mother is the light. The last thing we ever see is the light. For me it is very very important - I have a real passion for the light.

David VillageYour work ranges widely in both form and style. Tell us about some of your favourites.

Giuseppe Scutella: I do not have only one style because I think it’s more important to be free and to use as many styles as possible. I can say, however, that I do not like any designs which are too decorative, for example the Memphis style and any which are overly fussy. I have many passions, for example art, sculpture and photography which I draw on when thinking of a new product. For example the Pirce is a sculpture with the light inside or a light with sculpture on the outside.

Artemide

(Parentesi)

David Village: Are there any other lights that you like?

Giuseppe Scutella: There are many lights which I like but if you ask me which is the best lamp ever produced then I have two favourites which are very very exciting – the perfect lamps. The first one is the Parentesi by Achille Castiglioni and the second is the Eclisse by Vico Magistretti. Achille Castiglioni, I don’t remember when exactly but around 1962, when I was born, he created the perfect light without sculpture. It’s so simple. The Parentesi has a tube which can move along the tensioned wire with a spotlight head. There isn’t another light quite like this because the light is like a sun which can easily be moved. The first time that I saw the lamp I didn’t appreciate the concept but after one second I understood how it is great, how it is amazing and clever. This lamp is more resistant to time for the next 20/30 years - it is evergreen. The second one is Eclisee. It’s like a child with a light. You put your hands in front of your face to shade the light and use a simple movement to alter the amount of light which escapes. These two examples are my favourites.

Artemide

(Eclisee)

David Village: Do the designers and design scene in Milan inspire your work?

Giuseppe Scutella: Absolutely. The first one is Achille Castiglioni but there are many Italian designers I like very much. For example, I think one of the greatest master designers was Burno Munari who wrote about 10 books on design. If you read his book which was written about 15 years ago it defines everything that will happen for the next 50 years. The next designer, who I was l lucky to have known when he was alive, is Angelo Mangiarotti.

Artemide(Angelo Mangiarotti)

He was the designer of the Lesbo table lamp for Artemide and other great pieces. When I was lucky to know him, he was 88 years old. I found that I have never met another person like him with such a fresh intellect as his, with childlike enthusiasm for everything. We worked together on a project to design interior products and this great master at 88 years old still had the mind of a young boy. Every time I spoke to him I wanted to design things, but not like him as that would be impossible, but anyway to try. Another designer I like the drawings of is Enzo Mari with his simple line, but there are many designers who inspire me. I live about 80km from Milan so the first designers that I was fortunate to know were Italian. From other countries I very much like the Bauhaus and even today you see its influence at the Salone Del Mobile Furniture Fair. I don’t know where the original good idea comes from but some designers don’t take risks, they play safe, but others are full of ideas. I want to be where any ideas can come.

Artemide

(Lesbo)

David Village: The Pirce is one of Artemide best selling pendant lights, what inspired its architectural form?

Giuseppe Scutella: Pirce is the very melting pot of my passion. I love very much, for example, sculpture and art, and I love naturally the light. When you see Pirce you can understand that, whether it is on or off it’s like a sculpture. For me it is important to give people many different points of view.  If you walk around the Pirce, every angle is completely different. It isn’t just a shape with light, it’s completely different. When on, it plays with the shadows and light and gives just the right balance.

Artemide

(Pirce)

David Village: Your latest new designs for Artemide are Pan and Babilonia. Pan is much more traditional than the designs we are used to seeing from you. What is the reason for this?

Giuseppe Scutella: Three years ago I stayed in London with my family and we all went to the library where we saw these beautiful green desk lamps. First I thought what a great light, but then with all the latest technology, it is a light which today shouldn’t exist. My idea was to change this design updating and improving it for today, but with respect. I wanted to keep the green colour being soft and best for the eye. This is how pan was created.

Artemide

(Pan)

David Village: Babilonia is contemporary on the verge of futuristic. Can you tell us your idea behind this design?

Giuseppe Scutella: Babilonia uses the power from the led like waves from a central point in space. The waves are lit with light crystallising on their surface and when off completely invisible. I thought of a wave of light that propagates in space, starting from a central core.

Artemide

(Babilonia)

David Village: Thank you for this fascinating interview. We look forward to seeing and understanding all your designs in the future.

Giuseppe Scutella: It’s a pleasure.

Muuto

New Colours and Designs Added

Among many others, Muuto released their latest designs at the recent Euroluce lighting design exhibition. In addition to new designs Muuto have also added new colours to some of their most loved collections.

Ambit Rail Suspension

Muuto

The new Ambit Rail suspension is an extension to the well loved Ambit collection. The Ambit Rail is made from three shades which are mounted onto a tube leaving a minimal yet striking impression.  Muutos key focus in the design was the fluidity of the lamp thus making all the joints and cables hidden and making the supporting wire incredibly thin.

Focus Table

Muuto

Muutos new table lamp, Focus, creates an ideal space to place small objects whilst producing a warm pleasing presence. The table lamps small bell-shaped head gives it a subtle yet poetic character and fits perfectly on a windowsill or a on a shelf deserving of special attention.

As well as the new designs Muuto have added new colours to two existing collections. The unfold pendant and the E27 lamp are both now available in nude and olive finishes.

Marset

Featured – Marset Discoco

The Marset Discoco is a beautiful design when either on or off. Its complex simplicity provides direct downwards illumination and creates soft shadows which exude from all around the shade.

Both attractive and decorative, the Discoco has been one of Marset’s most popular designs since its release in 2009 with it incorporating a Scandinavian design with a Mediterranean style.

Marset

The Marset Discoco collection includes a wall, ceiling and suspension version. Each version is made from a collection of polycarbonate discs in white, black and gold, matt grey or matt beige. Louis Poulsen

New Colour – AJ Collection

Louis Poulsen is honouring Arne Jacobsen and celebrating the 60th anniversary of his iconic AJ design by releasing new and dynamic colours to the range. The collection includes a floor, table and wall version.

The 3 piece collection is still available in the original black, white and pale petroleum options but now has 7 new colours. The new colours in the collection consist of dark green, ochre, rust red, midnight blue, aubergine and two grey midtones.

The colours are linked closely to Arne Jacobsen’s universe and have been selected to show of the essence of the lamp.

Louis Poulsen

“The AJ lamps are famous for their sculptural design. The new colour collection consists of both classic and more contemporary tones, which all share the trait of highlighting the design of the AJ lamp itself,” says Idea & Design Director Rasmus Markholt from Louis Poulsen.

The AJ table, floor and wall lamps were designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen where they were an integral part of the hotels design concept. The AJ lamp has since become a world famous design and one of Arne Jacobsen’s most popular lamps.

Louis Poulsen

“Arne Jacobsen was an aesthete to his fingertips, and it is no accident that he was often given responsibility for the interiors of the buildings he designed – right down to the smallest detail. He originally dreamed of being an artist before choosing to train as an architect, and his artistic talent and courage clearly shine through in both his unique design idiom and his sense of colour. That is why we feel it is in keeping with his spirit to update the AJ lamps with a range of classic and inspirational colours,” adds Rasmus Markholt.

The design for the AJ shade was based on using two geometric shapes; the cylinder for the socket and the cone shade. The lamp directs the light where it's needed making is ideal for use as both a work light and a reading lamp.

Le Klint

New brand available – Le Klint

We are excited to announce that Le Klint lighting is now available to buy online. The Danish based company began in the early 20th century when a hand pleated lamp shade was made to fit a lamp, both designed by architect and master of engineering, Jensen-Klint.

Le Klint

Klint’s family and friends worked hard to help him refine the new shade and in return they each received one as a gift from him.

In 1943 the brand Le Klint was made official and was led by Tage Klint. The brand is known throughout the world for its unique craftsmanship and has been awarded many honours over the years.

Their range is constantly being developed and modernized inline with the latest technology available.

Below is a collection of our favourite designs by Le Klint!

We already have some of their designs online and will be adding more from the collection over the next few days. Click here to view the range!

In March’s issue of Elle Decoration Editor Michelle Ogundehin discusses the idea of grey being the new neutral. Over the last few years neutrals have turned their connotations from boring dull shades to now express high end style. In the mist of that, grey is also now going against the ideas of being an old age, cold colour and is now one which is seen to easily fit into your interior giving you a step up from whites and neutrals.

Artuo alvarez

Arturo Alvarez’s Ballet Collection wins Best of the Year!

Last year was a great year for Arturo Alvarez as it won the Best of the Year Award for its Ballet Chandelier Collection. The Ballet composition was the winner of the category, Lighting Chandeliers, which was revealed during the award ceremony attended by the Arturo Alvarez team.

The awards are organised by Interior Magazine, a global reference in the industry, these awards recognise the most significant designs of the year.

Artuo alvarez

Arturo Alvarez have shared their happiness regarding receiving the award stating “It’s a great satisfaction that our chandelier, designed by Héctor Serrano and made based on the experimentation with Simetech, a material registered by arturo alvarez, has been chosen as the best of the year, something that strengthens our trust in the innovation and the development and use of new materials”.

Ballet is a collection of pendants that arises from the experimentation with Simetech. The material allows forms to be created from the overlap and joints of their vertices, leaving freedom in the flexibility of the material.  The result is a fluid shape which changes depending on the point of view.

Plie, Relevé, Elancé ... a constant dance of light and shadows.

Foscarini

Featured – Foscarini Birdie

The Birdie collection by Foscarini is a family of lamps which is inspired by the poetic image of a bird on a branch.

Although they are all recognisably part of the birdie collection, each version of the birdie lamp is a design in its own right. The collection includes suspension, wall, floor and table options and is available in White, Grey, Amaranth or Orange.

Foscarini

Wall

The Birdie wall model expands the possibility of creating combination of the various versions. It’s subtle design and natural inspiration allows the wall version to blend in easily with the most unlikely of settings creating a different looks for each space.

Foscarini

Suspension

The Birdie suspension is suspended in the air with its straightforward and harmonious diffuser. Multiple suspension versions are also available. With either 3,6 or 9 shades the suspension has the same number of white finish arms which act almost like branches of a tree to support the diffusers. Thanks to the additional cable set, the Birdie pendant can be made to suit your room whatever the ceiling height and is available in a ceiling version should no drop be required.

Foscarini

Table

The Birdie table has a slim stem which represent the trunk of a tree. The shade is a reinterpretation of the classic reading lamp while the branch beckons your touch, turning it on or off. These elements work together to give life to a friendly lamp which combines a smooth and familiar structure with a bold character. The Birdie come in two sizes ensuring whether placed in the living room, on a desk or on a bedside table the lamp fits in naturally in the space and add a stylish touch to everyday life.

Foscarini

Floor

The Birdie floor has a similar design to the table with a long slim stem and a classic shade with a branch like detail. The Birdie floor stands at 150cm and is perfect to be used to light a area for example where you sew or read.

One of our favourite brands of last year has to be Anglepoise. The company has a long history with it going back more than 150 years. There designs are unique with a sleek and elegant touch, perfect for any room in your home. The collection has great versatility with it including table, pendant, wall and wall mounted options which all come in a range of heritage inspired colours. The iconic Anglepoise design is given a new feel with a woven cable and authentic brass detailing. Innermost

The Innermost Story

As we head into a new year we take a look at the story behind innermost and some of our favourite designs.

Back in 1999 Steve Jones and Russell Cameron shared a vision to create a company which utilised their extended experience in design consultancy and furniture design. The pair through their experience had seen plenty of raw, talented designers that were never being advanced beyond the conceptual. They realised that if they combined their design and manufacturing experience with these concepts that they could turn the ideas in unique and diverse products under just a single brand.

Beads Octo Pendant

During the early discussions came that of choosing a stand out name for their brand. They thought about a name which was ‘close to their hearts’; ‘the inner thoughts; ‘the inner-most dreams’… And so, innermost was born.

With their instinctive desire to be rebels from the norm they utilise materials and processes in unique ways to defy expectations. With there depth of experience it allows them to rethink conventional approaches and explore their passion for light and how illumination can be used as a raw material.

Core Pendant

The innermost team are passionate about each and every design and the high level of detail which goes into its production. Their hands on approach to manufacturing sees them travelling the world to source to best quality materials and best producer for every component of every product. However, whether they are prototyping in Hong Kong, using hand-blown glass by artisans in the Czech Republic, or doing bespoke engineering at their factory in the UK they remain close the manufacturing at every level.

Their designs bring people together whether in a cafés, bars or meeting rooms they’re perfect for brightening up central spaces and helping to celebrate the social side of life.

As a company of designers, curators and industry experts they thrive from taking wild ideas and creating beautiful, thoughtful and innovative products.

Light Years

Featured - Light Years Suspence

The inspiration for the suspence series was from the idea of translating a movement into a physical shape. The shade of the lamp has been created by pulling an elementary movement involving physical force. The force of this is visible at the top of the lamp where you can see the tip. The natural soft curves of the suspense pendant are designed to fit in with a monochrome interior and the shade and cord are perceived to be one uninterrupted design.

Light Years

The infinity diffuser at the bottom of the lamp prevents glare and concentrates the light creating an elegant optical illusion. The Suspence design is available in two sizes and three colours with the matt monochrome finishes benefiting any room interior.
