Wastberg

The new refined Winkel

The new w127 Winkel is a developed version of Wastberg’s award winning and best selling task light originally introduced in 2012.

Wastberg

Wastberg have worked hard to refine some key areas of the lamp such as the mechanics, and operation and of course the light source.

The w127 is the result of a collaboration between Wästberg, the Berlin-based designer Dirk Winkel and the Gemany-based chemical company BASF. They spent more than three years developing what they consider the most refined task light ever seen.

The w127 winkel challenges the perception of plastic, going further than the norm, not only in terms of function and looks, but also in terms of the feel and tactility of the material. No second skin, no paint coat; the true, bold material in its pure form.

It is based on over 60% biologically sourced and recyclable material from the castor plant. This represents a step ahead by setting the course for producing independently of mineral oil based plastics.

This year Porta Romana is celebrating its 30th anniversary since starting life in 1988.  From the beginning their ambition has been to create beautiful and inspiring pieces that would be loved.

Porta Romana has evolved over the past three decades and they have become a leading global brand.

David Village Lighting has enjoyed working with Porta Romana for the last decade and seeing their beautifully unique styles and designs.

To celebrate their anniversary they have released a selection of new products and finishes and below are our favourites now available to order.

Grok

Grok

Grok

Grok was created in 1998 and is a part of the LEDS-C4 group which has been designing and producing lights for interior and exterior design projects for over 4 decades. David Village Lighting has been working with Grok for many years on projects but we now introduce Grok to buy online as we think the range is also great for residential interiors.

Grok embodies a way of understanding and interacting with one another that is based on intuition and empathy.

Grok

When they were first established they made a commitment to create a contemporary product line that would decorate and build spaces through attractive design and they believe there is a light perfectly suited to each room, each activity and each individual.

New Equatore collection from

Fontana Arte

At David Village Lighting we pride ourselves on supplying the best in modern lighting and we love it when a new release sees a classic design modernised.

The new Equatore collection by Fontana Arte is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic lamp with a glass shade.

While the traditional Gabriele e Oscar Buratti design uses the shade to contain the light source the shade is suggestively empty.

Fontana Arte

The light is produced by the LEDs and thanks to internal screens arranged in layers, is distributed regularly across the surface of the discs, magically illuminating them.

The lower disk directs the light output downwards and the upper one illuminates the glass cap for a soft, diffused light.

The Equatore family includes a table, floor and suspension and is available in two finishes; a cooler version in grey with a dark chrome frame, and a warmer version with a transparent pink cap and a copper-coloured frame.

Muuto

The Iconic Muuto Under The Bell

David Village Lighting loves Iconic designs and the Muuto Under The Bell is one of our favourites.

We love the multi-functional pendant lamp as the design not only provides an ambient light but also enhances the acoustics of the room.

Muuto

A large sheet of recycled plastic felt is heated in a mould and pressed into shape. Available in black and grey, the lamp blends effortlessly into open spaces. The Bell is an example of modern design with hints to Scandinavian values.

Muuto

“Under The Bell is not just a lampshade. When hung over a table or in an open environment it creates its own space within the bigger space. That way, the lamp embraces and shelters the table and people beneath it - both physically and in a more abstract sense. The recycled plastic felt even absorbs sound and helps improve the acoustics of your room.”

Kartell

The iconic Kartell Master chair

After many years of working with Kartell the iconic Master chair is still our best seller from their collection.

The Masters chair is a powerful tribute to three symbolic chairs, interpreted by the creative genius of Philippe Starck.

Kartell

The unmistakable silhouettes of the "Series 7" by Arne Jacobsen, the "Tulip Armchair" by Eero Saarinen and the "Eiffel Chair" by Charles Eames are interwoven into a hybrid giving life to a fusion of original and engaging styles.

The Masters is light, practical and stackable and can be used outdoors.

Kartell

The Masters chair was honoured with the prestigious "2010 Good Design Award" presented by the Chicago Athenaeum - Museum of Architecture and Design and the 2013 Red Dot Design Award.

Brokis

Light Vision 2018

After much anticipation Brokis have now released their new Light Vision collection for 2018.

First shown at IMM Cologne and all designed by Brokis’s Art Director, Lucie Koldova, the new lighting concepts each offer new and unique designs.

Brokis is one of our most loved lighting brands and late last year we were invited to visit them in the Czech Republic and tour their beautiful Janštejn Glassworks. We saw first hand the lengthy process which ensures every light is made to the highest of standard.

Puro Sparkle

Brokis

Puro is a boldly minimalistic collection which was inspired by the Spanish word for ‘Cigar’ which also means ‘Pure’ in reference to the designs clean lines.

The endless variability of the Puro collection has given rise to a new suspension light called Sparkle. Sparkle levitates in space and dominates its interior landscape. It is a light sculpture and the embodiment of positive energy.

Click here to view the Puro Sparkle!

Big One

Brokis

The Big One embodies gentle, poetic and balanced proportions.

Big One is a new large-format light with a matt core. Within a protective outer shell of glass, a ray of light emanates from a smaller glass sphere and passes freely through. The sophisticated design of a bubble suspended in the centre of a large sphere evokes a sense of levitation in space.

Click here to view the Big One!

Jack O’Lantern

Brokis

The Jack O’ Lantern was designed to be a functional object with an aesthetic look of a jewel in the home.

The almost levitating metal frame holds a luminous pearl of mouth blown matt glass.

This subtle and geometrically balanced light offers a wide variety of combinations. It can be hung separately or in vertical lighting arrangements. In addition to the suspension variant, there is also a wall composition comprising five frames joined in a single module for up to five glass spheres, which rely on nothing more than gravity to stay in place.

Click here to view the Jack O’ Lantern!

Ivy

Brokis

Just as plants grow and climb up the walls of a house, Ivy offers a special system of modular components, thanks to which it can be used to achieve a highly innovative take on decorative lighting in both vertical and horizontal compositions. The elegant branches can be hung separately or joined together to create a curtain of light.

Variable, elegant, and precise, Ivy is a high-tech lighting concept well suited to both commercial and residential applications.

Marset

New in from Marset

Marset

David Village Lighting is always excited about new releases and loves to learn more about the ideas.

A favourite of ours, Marset, has recently released three brand new designs and a handful of new styles to some of their best selling collections.

We love working with Marset and their designs as they create more than just a lamp, they create pieces which create an atmosphere with character to improve our quality of life.

Below is a little bit about the new releases.

Dripping Light

Marset

Beyond its function as a lamp the Marset Dipping Light table seeks to excite.

Designer Jordi Canudas wanted to capture the essence of light and experiment with dipping a bulb into paint several times with the result this beautiful table light.  The various layers of paint draw concentric circles and capture the light, moderating its intensity.

This collection is available in two sizes and several colours: green, amber, pink, white, black and blue. When turned on, its different shades of paint sift the light, creating a magical ambient effect. When off, its coloured glass sphere is an object charged with beauty perfect for a shelf, bedside, or table.

The Dipping Light has recently been given a Metropolis Likes award.

Click here to view the Dripping Light collection!

Discocó Oak

Marset

If there is one iconic lamp in the Marset collection, it’s the Discocó. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary the Discocó has been released in a new finish, oak.

The new edition is available in a 68cm pendant model with American oak discs and a black chrome structure.

The new Discocó pays homage to the original and with is new wooden discs it emits a welcoming light.

Click here to view the new Discocó!

Funiculí

Marset

The original Funiculí was designed over 30 years ago but is still just as modern and functional as the day it was designed. This year Marset have brought out a new fabric shade Funiculí, a design that Lluís Porqueras first conceived in 1979 but that is only now seeing the light of day. Respecting the initial design to the fullest, only its proportions have been updated. This new fabric shade is available as a floor, table or wall versions and in two colours; beige or white, with a black structure.

Click here to view the new Funiculí!

High Line

Marset

Another brand new collection from Marset is the structurally beautiful Highline floor.

The svelte line design gives out light without revealing its source. The design is made of three blocks which stand out for their shapes and tones: the vertical, light-carrying element in oak or wenge is attached to a block of lacquered wood fitted to a black base.

The High Line floor is available in 4 finishes and each contrast with the warmth of the wood.

Click here to view the High Line floor!

Santorini

Marset

Santorini was originally created as an outdoor light inspired by the lamps on fishing vessels. Now four years after its release Marset have brought out an indoor suspension version. The essence of the design remains the same but the finishes are more subdued giving the Santorini a softer feel. The Indoor Santorini light can still be direct or reflected simply and easily by changing the shades which are available in four colours: soft pink, clear green, sand or off-white.

Click here to view the new elegant santorini!

Vetra

Marset

Another brand new collection from Marset is Vetra. At first glance it seems no more than a traditional blown glass lamp but designer Joan Gaspar has creatively placed the light source outside-instead of inside-the shade. Vetra features a completely closed glass diffuser giving out a beautiful light without glare directing most of the light downwards.

The collection includes a table, a floor and three suspensions. The table and floor versions feature a stem which is divided into two unequal parts, a feature that breaks the symmetry, adds beauty and elegantly provides an outlet for the cable.

Vibia

New Vibia Collections

Last month we told you all about the new Vibia Guise collection and we are thrilled to share that it is now available along with 2 other brand new families and an addition to the North family.

We have been working with Vibia for many years and in that time we have seen the most beautiful design pieces released by them.

The 3 new collections are all families which all work well placed on their own or together in a space.

Guise

Vibia

The new Guise collection includes two wall versions and both horizontal and vertical pendants. The versatility of the collection allows for it to be placed over a dinning table, in a sitting room, used as office lighting and areas where a cluster of lights is needed. Designer Stefan Diez worked with Vibia to develop a collection which explored the ability of glass. The collection joins together technique and tradition with the latest technology.

Vibia

Guise uncovers a new potential for LED technology with the light source invisible, emanating directly from the material. When off its transparency makes it almost disappear and when on it gives a fluid, luminous presence.

Click here to view the Guise collection!

Musa

The new Musa family is designed by Note Design Studio based in Sweden. The Musa design is one of organic qualities and function. The delicate and elegantly designed collection includes a table, a wall and a portable version.

Vibia

The simple design creates a hint of light emitted by the small hand blown opal glass sphere which expands over the space which surrounds it.

The portable version has its own battery which can last up to 18 hours and has a push dimmer on the base making it perfect for adding a glow to a summer evening.

Click here to view the Musa collection!

Palma

Desginer Antoni Arola considers Palma as if it were a landscape project that will be transformed over time. The inspiration was to create ambience within an interior setting with a luminous hanging garden.

Vibia

The design introduces planting which is normally associated with the outdoors to an indoor setting. The collection includes a range of pendant and wall versions both with horizontal and vertical designs. In the family there are versions which have both the blown opal glass globe and the pot for a hanging plant and ones which have just the individual glass globe.

Palma has a warm dimmable integrated LED filleted by the 2 half glass spheres which are joined together by an aluminium ring in either graphite or white.

Click here to view the Palma collection!

North

The new addition to the North collection is a floor lamp which is suspended from the ceiling using an almost invisible steel cable. The light has a counterweight placed on the ground which guides the electrical cable and allows the stem and shade to be placed wherever required.

Vibia

The North family is an Arik Levy design and is elegant, varied and very adaptable. The new version adds to the family a floor light that luminously covers but does not invade the surrounding space.

Orsjo

New additions to the Orsjo Streck family

At David Village Lighting we love families of lights and we are excited to share that Swedish based design company, Orsjo have expanded their popular Streck family to now include pendant and wall versions. The new additions join the family which already include a table and floor version.

We think the family looks great when used together and helps to create a theme in any room. The floor version is one of our favourites and is great for beside a sofa for reading.

Orsjo

The sleek and elegant Streck design combines powder coated metal components with brushed brass joints. The collection features a warm glowing light both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

“Part of the way I work is very involved in how we look at things – as if we are always on a visit to a museum. Streck is the result of this – the essence of a particular type of fitting I have always loved. With just a few, very carefully selected lines, the Streck family has been given a long life.”

Northern

New in from Northern

Recently Northern have released three brand new and exciting designs. Below is a little bit about each of them and how we think best to incorporate them into your home.

Fold

The new Fold pendant is a spectacular design which is structured from crisp folds that brings Japanese origami to mind.

The shade is made from wool fabric which has been laminated and is supported by an inner structure which helps hold the shape.

Northern

In addition the wool has acoustic properties that dampen ambient sound and absorb noise. From its position below the shade the lamp illuminates the patterns in the fabric and casts a downwards light.

The shade can be titled to one to help direct the light, perfect for example in a study where you may want a more directed light.

Blush

The new Blush wall light from Northern both lights up a room yet shies away from the spotlight. Blush’s shape is subtle with the details discreet.

Northern

Blush’s soft, flexible arm makes it easy to angle the shade and create a directional light, perfect for beside a bed for reading.

The light intensity can be lowered using the dimmer switch on the wall brakcet. Blush is available in either black or pink each giving a different impression.

Balancer

Balancer is the new showstopper floor lamp from Northern. Expertly crafted from black powder coated steel, Balancer offers a stunning combination of light, geometry and style.

Northern

The floor lights clean lines make the style unique and the heavy cylinder base anchors the structure firmly to the floor.

With a turn of a swivel key, the shade levers upwards or pivots downwards.  The light can be dimmed allowing Balancer to be both direct and diffused.

Balancer is great for in a study or living space where you need a more directional light.

BEGA

Photo Diary - our trip to Bega, Germany

Recently some of our team travelled to Germany after being invited by Bega to learn all about their beautifully engineered products.

We began our trip with a mesmerising light show at their outdoor factory and showroom in Menden. Next stop was Limburg which is home to Bega’s indoor glass factory where we got to see expert glass makers at work.

Below we’ve put together a photo diary of our trip!

Muuto

New in from Muuto

We’ve recently added some of Muuto’s latest designs online and below we have all you need to know about the latest must haves.

Tip Table

Muuto

The Tip table is created from the idea of stripping a design down to its essentials. The design is by Jens Fager, one of Sweden’s most interesting young designers. Fager graduated from Stockholm’s KonstfackUniversity and has made his mark on the international design scene with exhibitions in London, Milan and Stockholm. The table light is an example of a simple, functional design with careful attention to detail offering a direct as well as ambient light.
The power coated aluminium frame is available in a range of colours and has a dimmer function enabling you to effortlessly control the light intensity.

“TIP is a purist yet playful lamp that features a characteristic architectural silhouette. During the design process, I focused on polishing every single detail while emphasising the functional aspect of the lamp: I wanted to reduce the design to the very essence of its purpose. The moulded aluminium frame lends the Tip Lamp a clean, precise look, underscoring its subtle aesthetic.” Jens Fager.

Airy Table

Muuto

The new Airy table collection is a design by one of Scandinavia’s leading designers, Cecilie Manz. Airy consist of a polished plywood table top and a metal frame which is soldered and welded to create a light and skinny silhouette. The collection is available in four different sizes, shapes and colours; grey, black, Oregon pine or off white.

“The idea behind AIRY was to create a coffee table that did not scream but still was not afraid to speak. The result is a table series that masters the fine balance between being light and airy, and at the same time having plenty of personality and individuality. Due to this combination AIRY gets a multi-functionality that makes the side tables suitable for every kind of interior.” Cecilie Manz.

Loft Chair

Muuto

The loft chair by designer Thomas Bentzen is inspired by life’s everyday requirements.  The chairs design is simple and honest with contrasting materials. Loft’s solid, powder coated steel frame is offset with the warmth of plywood and is a nostalgic nod to industrial design. The visible screws further enhance the engineered feel and the materials provide a functional yet sophisticated chair fitting for any setting.

“The steel frame features simple joints and welds, lending a precise and solid appearance to the chair. The curved seat and backrest contrast this, making the Loft Chair very human and comfortable.” Thomas Bentzen

Artemide

An exclusive interview with Giuseppe Scutella

While in Milan visiting Euroluce; the largest lighting exhibition in the world, our very own David Village got the chance to interview designer Giuseppe Scutella. He has designed many masterpieces throughout his career with one of his most recent pieces being the Artemide Pirce.

We took this chance to learn more about the way Giuseppe Scutella creates his beautiful design and what inspires him the most.

Artemide

(David Village and Giuseppe Scutella)

David VillageWhat attracts you to lighting design and do you prefer this to other types of product design?

Giuseppe Scutella: My preference is for designing lights because for me a light is completely different from other items, say a chair or a library. Why, because the light is alive, it is an object which is alive. In the morning when we wake, we see light coming through the window and you can feel its effect. Light is the only product that can exist without the shape, only through the effect that it produces. This particular for me is always very important not only because we can always turn a light off or turn on, but because it is completely different from all others products. Mario Bellini, a famous designer a few years ago thought that one chair is enough, because a chair is only an object. But for a designer like me each light is completely different. With each light we design we can put inside our emotions which cannot exist in other products. For this reason 80% of my energy in a year will be working on lighting designs and the light which they produce.

David VillageSo you prefer to design lighting rather than objects, even though it can be more technical?

Giuseppe Scutella: Yes. We have the interesting change now from electrics to electronics. It is a bit like when analogue changed to digital. We must change to the new technology with all new designs but it’s very important for me to still keep the emotional effect of the lamp. When I see a lamp I have to feel it. The first thing we see after 9 months inside our mother is the light. The last thing we ever see is the light. For me it is very very important - I have a real passion for the light.

David VillageYour work ranges widely in both form and style. Tell us about some of your favourites.

Giuseppe Scutella: I do not have only one style because I think it’s more important to be free and to use as many styles as possible. I can say, however, that I do not like any designs which are too decorative, for example the Memphis style and any which are overly fussy. I have many passions, for example art, sculpture and photography which I draw on when thinking of a new product. For example the Pirce is a sculpture with the light inside or a light with sculpture on the outside.

Artemide

(Parentesi)

David Village: Are there any other lights that you like?

Giuseppe Scutella: There are many lights which I like but if you ask me which is the best lamp ever produced then I have two favourites which are very very exciting – the perfect lamps. The first one is the Parentesi by Achille Castiglioni and the second is the Eclisse by Vico Magistretti. Achille Castiglioni, I don’t remember when exactly but around 1962, when I was born, he created the perfect light without sculpture. It’s so simple. The Parentesi has a tube which can move along the tensioned wire with a spotlight head. There isn’t another light quite like this because the light is like a sun which can easily be moved. The first time that I saw the lamp I didn’t appreciate the concept but after one second I understood how it is great, how it is amazing and clever. This lamp is more resistant to time for the next 20/30 years - it is evergreen. The second one is Eclisee. It’s like a child with a light. You put your hands in front of your face to shade the light and use a simple movement to alter the amount of light which escapes. These two examples are my favourites.

Artemide

(Eclisee)

David Village: Do the designers and design scene in Milan inspire your work?

Giuseppe Scutella: Absolutely. The first one is Achille Castiglioni but there are many Italian designers I like very much. For example, I think one of the greatest master designers was Burno Munari who wrote about 10 books on design. If you read his book which was written about 15 years ago it defines everything that will happen for the next 50 years. The next designer, who I was l lucky to have known when he was alive, is Angelo Mangiarotti.

Artemide(Angelo Mangiarotti)

He was the designer of the Lesbo table lamp for Artemide and other great pieces. When I was lucky to know him, he was 88 years old. I found that I have never met another person like him with such a fresh intellect as his, with childlike enthusiasm for everything. We worked together on a project to design interior products and this great master at 88 years old still had the mind of a young boy. Every time I spoke to him I wanted to design things, but not like him as that would be impossible, but anyway to try. Another designer I like the drawings of is Enzo Mari with his simple line, but there are many designers who inspire me. I live about 80km from Milan so the first designers that I was fortunate to know were Italian. From other countries I very much like the Bauhaus and even today you see its influence at the Salone Del Mobile Furniture Fair. I don’t know where the original good idea comes from but some designers don’t take risks, they play safe, but others are full of ideas. I want to be where any ideas can come.

Artemide

(Lesbo)

David Village: The Pirce is one of Artemide best selling pendant lights, what inspired its architectural form?

Giuseppe Scutella: Pirce is the very melting pot of my passion. I love very much, for example, sculpture and art, and I love naturally the light. When you see Pirce you can understand that, whether it is on or off it’s like a sculpture. For me it is important to give people many different points of view.  If you walk around the Pirce, every angle is completely different. It isn’t just a shape with light, it’s completely different. When on, it plays with the shadows and light and gives just the right balance.

Artemide

(Pirce)

David Village: Your latest new designs for Artemide are Pan and Babilonia. Pan is much more traditional than the designs we are used to seeing from you. What is the reason for this?

Giuseppe Scutella: Three years ago I stayed in London with my family and we all went to the library where we saw these beautiful green desk lamps. First I thought what a great light, but then with all the latest technology, it is a light which today shouldn’t exist. My idea was to change this design updating and improving it for today, but with respect. I wanted to keep the green colour being soft and best for the eye. This is how pan was created.

Artemide

(Pan)

David Village: Babilonia is contemporary on the verge of futuristic. Can you tell us your idea behind this design?

Giuseppe Scutella: Babilonia uses the power from the led like waves from a central point in space. The waves are lit with light crystallising on their surface and when off completely invisible. I thought of a wave of light that propagates in space, starting from a central core.

Artemide

(Babilonia)

David Village: Thank you for this fascinating interview. We look forward to seeing and understanding all your designs in the future.

Giuseppe Scutella: It’s a pleasure.

Muuto

New Colours and Designs Added

Among many others, Muuto released their latest designs at the recent Euroluce lighting design exhibition. In addition to new designs Muuto have also added new colours to some of their most loved collections.

Ambit Rail Suspension

Muuto

The new Ambit Rail suspension is an extension to the well loved Ambit collection. The Ambit Rail is made from three shades which are mounted onto a tube leaving a minimal yet striking impression.  Muutos key focus in the design was the fluidity of the lamp thus making all the joints and cables hidden and making the supporting wire incredibly thin.

Focus Table

Muuto

Muutos new table lamp, Focus, creates an ideal space to place small objects whilst producing a warm pleasing presence. The table lamps small bell-shaped head gives it a subtle yet poetic character and fits perfectly on a windowsill or a on a shelf deserving of special attention.

As well as the new designs Muuto have added new colours to two existing collections. The unfold pendant and the E27 lamp are both now available in nude and olive finishes.

Marset

Featured – Marset Discoco

The Marset Discoco is a beautiful design when either on or off. Its complex simplicity provides direct downwards illumination and creates soft shadows which exude from all around the shade.

Both attractive and decorative, the Discoco has been one of Marset’s most popular designs since its release in 2009 with it incorporating a Scandinavian design with a Mediterranean style.

Marset

The Marset Discoco collection includes a wall, ceiling and suspension version. Each version is made from a collection of polycarbonate discs in white, black and gold, matt grey or matt beige. The suspension has five sizes with the largest having a 132cm diameter, and the smallest being 35cm in diameter, perfect for over a dinning table or in a living area.
